Although they probably originate in Ancient Egypt, and were used in the prehistoric Near East, China, India and the Mediterranean, umbrellas did not come into general use in the UK until the 1780s. They had been used widely in France for the previous 80 years, but the English were reluctant to adopt them.<\/p>
