Although there has been no in-depth study of the history of the doorknob, a society called the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America had its annual conference in August.
These doorknobs are very ornate for a Baptist chapel. But they allow a person walking into the space from the outside to enter into a place of worship and devotion. A person passing through these doors moves from the domestic realm and into the presence of their god.
