Halifax Piano Club started over 30 years ago and was a forerunner of the many piano meet-up groups that can now be found throughout the UK. Based at the Crossley Gallery in Dean Clough, Halifax, West Yorkshire, the Piano Club not only offers a forum for pianists to play, perform and develop within a sympathetic and friendly environment, but also the opportunity to discuss aspects of piano playing and repertoire with fellow musicians.
At The Piano Club’s monthly meetings members choose whatever they want to perform and the group also regularly selects shared core topics that may only last a few weeks or stretch to several months. Such past projects have included Baroque keyboard music, Russian, French, Spanish, North and South American piano music, Debussy, “Les Six” and Liszt, sometimes narrowing down to specific works such as Kinderscenen, Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words or the Beethoven Sonatas but also to such technical topics as performance technique, fingering, pedalling and rubato playing.
The group normally meets on the first Sunday of each month from 10am to 1pm. Membership is free of charge. In the past The Piano Club has organised occasional members’ concerts and also recitals and masterclasses given by professional performers. We hope to be able to continue this at our new home.
The Crossley Art Gallery at Dean Clough has a beautiful Fazioli grand piano and can comfortably seat 150. It is conveniently situated close to Halifax Bus Station, and two huge car parks that are free on Sundays.
The Piano Club was started and is still run by David Nelson, who was the Artistic Director of the Hebden Bridge Piano Festival and programmes most of the music events at Wainsgate Chapel. which, like many other arts organisations, has now sadly fallen victim to the pandemic.
