SEKE CHIMUTENGWENDE WORKSHOP

THE WORKSHOP

How do we make choices when we are subject to conflicting impulses, information overload, constantly changing parameters, unstable environments? When do you ride it out, step back from it, put your foot down? How do we keep track of what’s important to us and how do we stay in touch with what is real?

This is an experimental performance workshop drawing on improvisational and choreographic practices and part of Seke’s ongoing research into how to work together to make performance.

Seke creates a non judgmental environment in his workshops. Participants should come expecting to move, use their voices and work with others. There will be the opportunity to watch each other in our explorations.

ABOUT SEKE

Seke uses choreography to experiment with collectivity and alternative approaches to authorship and governance; playing with form to shift and question hierarchies. His recent work It begins in darkness (2022), looks at ghosts and haunted houses as metaphors for how histories of slavery and colonialism haunt the present. Seke has also recently choreographed a work for Candoco Dance Company, In Worlds Unknown (2022). His next work, The Last Quartet, imagines a “last work” or “last attempt” at choreography, and will premiere in 2025.

Alongside his choreographic work, Seke has been practising completely improvised performance, using movement and text, since 2006. He has performed over 70 solo improvisations internationally and has performed ensemble improvisation with numerous dancers, actors and musicians. He is currently exploring Long Solos: long solo improvisation performances of 50 to 60 minutes.

Since 2004 Seke has performed for numerous dance companies including DV8 Physical Theatre and Lost Dog and is currently working as a performer with Forced Entertainment touring in shows If All Else Fails (2023) and Signal to Noise (2024).

Seke has been guest lecturer in improvisation at many institutions including, London Contemporary Dance School, The Rambert Schoo of Ballet and Contemporary Dancel, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Trinity Laban and P.A.R.T.S.
